Why We Love Working on the Eastside

SA2020 just celebrated our 1st anniversary in Sunset Station! As believers in the value of connected, supportive neighborhoods, we feel lucky to be a part of St. Paul Square, the Eastside, and all the exciting changes happening around us.

Due in large part to two federal grants, Eastside Promise Neighborhood and the Choice Neighborhood Program, along with the support of Eastpoint, development is ramping up on this side of town. The Dignowity Hill neighborhood is growing with new homes and renovations (and a farmers market!), the Convention Center and its nearby infrastructure updates are complete, and lots of great new local businesses are opening their doors.

Check out some of the reasons we love being a part of this area. While certainly not an exhaustive list of all the cool things coming to the Eastside, these are a few of our favorites that we’ve been able to check out:

Smoke

Smoke the Restaurant

Smoke, whose original location is in Stone Oak, brought its barbecue downtown in March, and they make terrific neighbors in St. Paul Square. The food is delicious, and it’s the perfect spot for a meeting (or meating) when we need a break from the office.

University of Houston’s Hilton College

With San Antonio’s booming tourism industry, both the city and University of Houston identified a need for more hospitality employees here. So, U of H brought their renowned Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management to San Antonio! The beautifully remodeled campus opened earlier this year at Sunset Station, where students will gain the experience and skills needed to move up the ranks in the hotel and restaurant workforce.

Tony G’s Soul Food

Tony G's Soul Food

Tony G’s Soul Food is our other new downstairs neighbor, and we couldn’t be happier. In fact, we might still be a little full from their grand opening breakfast last month. We’re very appreciative of their fried chicken, grits, and frequent live jazz.

Burleson Yard

A beer garden with a food truck, hammocks, and tasty drinks? Yes, please. Burleson Yard is just down the road from Sunset Station, and it’s the perfect place to enjoy a nice San Antonio afternoon or evening.

Estate Coffee Company & Oak and Salt

Estate Coffee

There’s coffee in our neighborhood now, and the caffeine addicts at SA2020 are very pleased. Estate Coffee Co. roasts their own coffee in-house and makes some seriously impressive drinks. They share the lovely space on Houston St. with Oak and Salt, which sells specialty salts and kitchen goods.

Luminaria

Recently, our city’s beloved contemporary arts festival announced that the Eastside will be the backdrop for this year’s festival! Every year, Luminaria showcases new artists and connects thousands of San Antonians to our city’s arts scene. We can’t wait to see Luminaria take over Carver Community Cultural Center, Hays Street Bridge, Dignowity Park, and more.

It’s a great time to be on the Eastside. We’re thankful for all of our neighbors who are helping make this neighborhood even more vibrant, and we can’t wait to see who joins us next!
