1 in 5 Minds Hosts Texas Premiere of ‘No Letting Go’

By Rebecca Helterbrand | Jan 19 2017

Anger. Resentment. Conflict. The family of a child going through a mental health crisis can experience a range of emotions. These emotions are on full display in a powerful movie based on one family’s true story – No Letting Go. This award-winning film makes its Texas premiere on Saturday, January 21 at the Santikos Palladium in San Antonio and you can get a ticket here. This screening will be followed by a Q&A with Randi Silverman, the movie’s executive producer and mother who wrote the movie based on her family’s story.

No Letting Go offers a vivid description of the complex challenges many families face, often behind closed doors. Watch the movie trailer here. As 9-year old Tim shows initial signs of mental illness, his mom, Catherine, is completely unaware of the extent of Tim’s illness. Tim’s father, a caring dad, initially thinks (like others) that it’s a problem of discipline. Most of her friends don’t understand their situation and many judge them. The school doesn’t see a problem and Catherine is utterly alone for several years.

This excellent film is a must-see for families who are impacted by mental illness, as well as family members, close friends, teachers and professionals. Unless you have experienced the trauma of seeing your child falling into the abyss of a mental health crisis, it is very difficult to understand what it’s like. The film tries to bridge this gap and does a great job.

The $10 ticket includes access to the movie premiere, refreshments and a post-viewing Q&A with the co-screenwriter and mother of the main character, Randi Silverman. Randi is an inspiring speaker and dedicated mental health advocate who spoke at Clarity Child Guidance Center’s Claritycon2016.

You will also have the opportunity to meet with 14 local agencies specialized in helping children and teens who experience mental or emotional disorders. Each will have a table with professionals ready to answer questions before and after the screening.

Doors open at 9:15 a.m. and the movie begins at 10 a.m. Tickets are available in advance here or at the door. Join us!

One in Five Minds, an advocacy campaign started by Clarity Child Guidance Center (CGC), was created to raise awareness about mental illness, to break down stigma, and to increase access to treatment for children regardless of their ability to pay.
