Fifty million K-12 students were enrolled in US schools in 2009. Of these, 32million (64%) were served National School Lunch Program (NSLP) meals and 12million (24%) were served School Breakfast Program (SBP) meals. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) gives schools cash and commodities to help cover the cost of the NSLP and SBP. In 2008, the USDA spent $14.7 billion and in 2009 it spent $15.4 billion on cash and commodities for the NSLP and SBP.2 For 2010, the USDA’s estimated cost is $17 billion.
