The Board Game

A leadership development training and matching program for nonprofit board service

With a focus on advancing racial equity, SA2020 has trained the leadership of Nonprofit Partners on best practices in board development and recruited San Antonians to learn how to successfully apply and serve on a nonprofit board. Then, we matched San Antonians to current board openings based on the expertise identified by participating Nonprofit Partners. Over three years, we’ve trained and matched 325 community members to more than 90 nonprofit organizations.

As of 2023, SA2020 will no longer host The Board Game. Thanks to all of the community members and Nonprofit Partners who have participated in The Board Game and to our sponsors who have made the program possible.

The Board Game has been a superior professional development resource that delivered instrumental board service education, invaluable networking connections, and vital tools to elevate my board governance to the next level. My professional development network has expanded exponentially to strategically root me in the San Antonio community and connect me with strong leaders that provide key mentorship and guidance. I am a new transplant to the area with quaint connections and was able to effectively leverage SA2020 to land a Board of Directors position.

Recruiting board members is always an important and sometimes hard task for any nonprofit. There is also an important push to make sure that one is seeking out diversity (in many ways from neighborhood, to experience, work, race, ethnicity, and relationships). This is hard for any one leader or nonprofit to do alone or even with existing board members. The Board Game does a lot of that work for you and CAM was able to be connected to two incredible board members with a new range of experience, relationships, and knowledge.

After 12 years of driving progress toward a shared community vision, SA2020, the nonprofit organization, is dissolving. We believe this is the most visionary thing we can do. We made this decision with the greatest care for our organizational values of leadership, community, and accountability, and we hope you’ll read more about it on our blog.

Our website is live with our final data release, showing where San Antonio stands on reaching the shared community vision. The data release is accompanied by our final call to action—a policy agenda for City government based on our unique bird’s-eye view of San Antonio.

While SA2020’s operations ended March 28, these resources, along with the last twelve years of our research and stories, will be available to download from our website through September 2024.
