This is San Antonio… I Think We Can Take The Heat

Ok, so before I get more into this blog writing thing, there are a few things you should know about me.

My sister all bundled up in our Michigan backyard. Sweet little eskimo!

My sister all bundled up in our Michigan backyard.

1) I was not born in Texas. *GASP “Say it isn’t so!” I was actually born in Michigan and moved to Texas when I was but a wee 2-year-old. I don’t remember Michigan, I’ve never been back to Michigan… basically all of this to say I call myself a Texan. Nothing against Michiganians, I just don’t remember you.

2) I grew up in south Texas about an hour south of Houston (NOT the Houston area mind you) and my team was (and probably will always be my favorite MLB team) the Houston Astros. The Rockets were in plain sight, but for some reason I feel more nostalgic about baseball and the ‘Stros. I think it’s because of all of the memories I made with my family, especially my dad.

I remember going to my first game at the Astrodome, sitting in those big orange seats, imagining Selena was performing the Star Spangled Banner… My dad telling me about Biggio and watching Bagwell hit, they were my favorites. I would play baseball with my dad and sisters and I would always bat like Bagwell, feet apart, butt low. I loved watching the ‘Stros make it to the World Series in 2005.

We like, really like the Astros.

We like, really like the Astros.

I didn’t care that they didn’t win ONE GAME. It was the buzz of the town, the White Sox voodoo dolls my mom made of the opposing players. It was just fun. I never felt like that again until I moved to San Antonio, and I absolutely love being a Spurs fan in this city.

3) Sorry (not sorry), I don’t really like football. Even though I DID go to every single football game for my high school (oh marching band, how I miss thee.)

Now I digress. You know these things about me so the rest of the blog should go smoother.

What does all of this have to do with WALKING?

We look happy, but those uniforms were hot!

We look happy, but those uniforms were hot!

Well, for starters, it’s pretty darn hot outside. As Texans, we know how totackle the heat; A/C, watermelons, sweet iced tea, shaved ice, we know how 100-degree weather works. In high school I would MARCH outside in it for hours wearing cloth overalls and a wool jacket. WHY do Texas marching bands operate in such a way?

Ahem, ok, that’s all good said and done, but what about the whole idea of walkability in San Antonio? It’s not just about; oh can I physically walk from point A to point B? No, there are more factors, like; oh can I walk from point A to point B without collapsing from heat exhaustion? Yes, if you take care of yourself.

And like the Spurs, you have to know how to beat the heat.
